The Power of Good Photography

I’ve been working with Asheville, NC clothing boutique Caravans for a long time now, and they are one of my favorite clients. I designed and built their website, I’ve tweaked their logo, and I’ve done their magazine advertising and rack cards for years. Owner Judith Oster is a delight, and has become a true friend. But. You knew there was a “but” coming, right?

It has been a struggle to get good, high resolution photos of the clothing, jewelry, and accessories Judith carries in her store. She works with exclusive niche designers from all over the world, so you would think it would be easy to get good images of their designs. Apparently not. If the photographs are good, they’re not high enough resolution for print advertising, and if the pictures are, well, not good, who cares?

True Confessions

I have a little secret to admit here. I’m picky about photos because I used to be a commercial photographer before I found my true calling in art and surface pattern design. In fact, I used to be Caravan’s photographer. So I’m biased, I freely confess it. But if you’re a business owner, you have to advertise and/or promote yourself and your product somehow. And to do that effectively, you need good images. So get them however you can, because it really matters!

The Happy Ending

At least for now, there is a happy ending to my little tale of photo woe, because Judith gave me some amazing images to work with for her latest ad campaign. And here is a little taste of the result.

Give Your Designer Something to Work With

If you’re working with a graphic designer, a marketing specialist, a branding consultant, a web designer or any other consultant for your business, remember that you have to give them something to work with, something of quality.

Excellent images and well written copy will give you and your business the results you want and the sales you deserve. If they don’t, you need a new designer. And I can help with that!
